Why Can't I Get What I Want?

By Bruce Wiley

Many of us, whether we know it or not, live within a prison of our own making. There are no metal bars in this prison, the walls can't be seen by the naked eye, but when it comes to keeping us from our freedom it's every bit as effective as a real prison cell. Our comfort zone is what this refers to.

Comfort zones can take on a variety of different forms, from the area in which you live and the circle of people with whom you socialise, to the amount of money you earn.

The primary force that keeps you living within your zone is your fear-based belief about what will happen if you move outside it.

The belief may be ridiculous or even realistic but even so, depending on the level of certainty you feel, you will accept it as the truth.

Even though your comfort zone isn't really comfortable at all, this virtual prison is actually what's keeping you from growing and evolving as a human being.

The bars to that prison are your fears about what may possibly happen if you move beyond them. This means that the key to your freedom is the removal of the underlying beliefs that cause those fears to exist.

Thinking of a goal or dream that you have that somehow seems out of reach is what you can try to do for a moment. Next, determine if it requires you to move out of your comfort zone and into unfamiliar territory in order to achieve it.

A new relationship, a dream job, starting your own business, losing weight, or living in a totally different part of the world is what it could be.

You would notice how a subtle feeling of fear and nervousness start to emerge in your stomach area or chest as you do this little exercise.

This refers to your unconscious mind springing into action and its intention is to dissuade you from doing anything it perceives may put you in danger.

You might yourself placing the blame on laziness or procrastination if there is a lack of progress towards your goals and most of the time, you won't even notice the constant influence your comfort zone plays in your life.

But you will begin to realize what the true cause is if you only stop and consider for just a moment why you can't seem to get that item crossed off your to-do list, make that phone call, or fill out that application: Whatever it is you want to do is outside of your comfort zone.

It is your beliefs that direct your mind to do this; therefore, in order to break through your self-imposed limitations and achieve the success you desire, you will need to remove them.
