What are the Benefits of Meditation

This is from a speech given by HH the Dalai Lama, which I have listened to and it very powerful, helpful and advantageous. He started off talking about the levels of the mind. He stressed on the fact that we primarily have a unawareness of what really is reality and that reality is not as firm as it appears to us. What is reality, we perceive differently on each level of mind. Take into consideration how you look at things once you are awake, which is the beta state of mind. When you are very relaxed, which is the alpha state, you see things a bit clearer. When you meditate, you are in the theta state, the reality becomes distinctive. You will understand things a lot more subjective and clearer, which will bring you internal peacefulness.

HH the Dalia Lama sees considerable value in having a peaceful mind. When a person is relaxed, he is more satisfied. He said that we get quietness through training of our mind.

He warned that we should not put all our desires on money and material things. You can be prosperous, but miserable. You can be poor and mentally happy. You need to have friends to be happy. If you are not loyal yourself, you will not trust others and so you will have no valid friends.

See benefit in wisdom. There are vacationers, who are not travelling to get wisdom, but because they have an essential hollowness and so they are hunting to fill this gap. Their travelling is more of a restlessness as it is searching to learn something new. The more you learn about yourself, different subjects, such as other cultures, you will grow inside and you will not feel empty.

If you meditate, you will attain a higher understanding and inner calmness. While you meditate you stay conscious, but you don't utilize your five senses. In this state you can into direct contact with your unconscious mind, which is the mind of the universe. Meditation is a means to give commands to your unconcious mind. HH the Dalai Lama says that while you meditate you can focus on something targeted as for example compassion.

Meditation has nothing to do with religion. You meditate because of a number of advantages. If you meditate, all physical elements are enhanced. If you meditate let us say thirty minutes a day, you will feel better in general, which is scientifically verified. Furthermore you will need a lot less sleep and you will get more than 30 minutes a day back. If you often feel negative emotions, you will become unhealthy. If you meditate, you will see things from a more subjective aspect and as a result you will not have negative emotions.

Through meditation you will gain inner calmness. Your power of attention will become more balanced and stronger. Your relation with others will become more moderate, more beneficial. Meditation minimizes strain. It is the inner calmness and the capability to see things more subjectively that relieve strain and as a result you will work more efficiently.

If you meditate, you see the reality more objectively, more clearly. You have to be active, but you will know better what is right for you to do. Anger and panic are negative emotions. Those feelings are self-destructive. If you are often filled with anger or fear, you will lose friends and get sick. Anger and fear will go away, because of the clarity of your mind. With meditation you can train your mind, and you will detach from anger and fear and become calm and more fulfilled.

Be active intellectually, but also physically. Suffering as in sports can bring mental bliss. If you are active, avoid from effecting pain to yourself and to others. We all need to act. If you meditate, you will not think of negative actions, but of actions that benefit not only you but also others.
